No trip home to San Ramon is complete without visiting Bay Books and Dublin’s Half Price Books. Spring cleaning at my parent’s house resulted in four boxes filled with John Grisham, Michael Crichton, Jean Auel, and a lot of Black Stallion and Misty of Chincoteague. I traded them in for a set of Star Wars art books, Peter Max’s Land of Blue, Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life, Pushpesh Pant’s India: The Cookbook and The Essential Lenny Bruce.

A couple earnest gems from Ira Glass on the strange life of the producer. Hat tip to Smarter Creativity.

I’d never really been on the set of a film and I didn’t realize the grueling hours of it. And I thought, this is because we’re an independent film, right? That we’re here for fourteen hours? … Wait, so when professional movie people make a film and they have more than a million bucks do this, this is the deal? Yea, this is the deal. I was really stunned.

I feel like everybody in America understands the stuff from watching DVD extras that it takes a long time… they have to light stuff, you know they shoot one actor and the other actor… you know that if you’re an entertainment consumer, but to be there and actually understand, that’s really real. You really have to do that. I understand it in my cells now, in a way that, I don’t know that I’m glad.

…

When you create a project, there’s always the ratio of here’s the fun part that you really like. And here’s the tedious thing you have to do to get it started, get the funding, organize it… In every project there’s kind of a balance. And there’s a grueling part of editing, re-editing, re-thinking. And so there’s the grueling part and a fun part. And it’s always a balance, as in any job.

In film, the proportion of gruel to the proportion of fun, is so unbelievably outsized, it’s crazy… It’s weird that people do it for a living.

Totally weird! Haha. On some days you do cap at 8-10 hours, especially if you’re on a project where no one can afford to be charged overtime. But more often than not, especially in post-production, a “half-day” means 12 hours not 4 .

And, also, good producers don’t get enough love. A good producer is often the difference between the success or failure of a project, no question.

some gallery shows that look interesting…

**revised 2/18/12**

Doug Wheeler @ David Zwirner
519 West 19th Street
thru February 25
One of Wheeler’s “infinity environments” – he plays with light and space so you lose all reference points, I got a bit of vertigo the first time I walked into one. There was a crazy long line when we went so I never got to try this show.

Zimoun @ Bitforms
529 West 20th Street
thru March 10
I usually stop at Bitforms every time I’m in Chelsea just to see what they’ve got going on. This time it looks like some sort of whirring motor installation. Fun!

Erik and Martin Demaine: Curved Crease Sculpture @ Guided by Invoices
558 West 21st Street
Thru March 3
Origami sculptures by father-and-son collaborators Martin and Erik Demaine. You might have seen them in the origami documentary Between the Folds.

Thomas Heatherwick @ Haunch of Venison
550 West 21st Street
Thru March 3
Designer/architect Thomas Heatherwick shows off some furniture extruded from single pieces of metal and a chair where you can literally sit and spin.

Weegee / Vivian Meier @ Steven Kasher
521 West 23rd Street
thru February 25

Ai Weiwei @ Mary Boone
541 West 24th Street
thru February 4
Ai Weiwei’s hand-painted porcelain sunflower seeds on view in NYC. Unfortunately, we can’t walk through them as the initial viewers at the Tate did due to toxic ceramic dust.

Tom Friedman: New Work @ Luhring Augustine
531 West 24th Street
Tom Friedman is a very meticulous man.

Paula Scheer @ Bryce Wolkowitz
505 West 24th Street
Thru February 18

James Nares @ Paul Kasmin
515 West 27th Street
thru February 11
I like the look of the black and white chronophotographs of a pendulum’s swing.
